Yew makes a good hunting bow but it is not tough enoughto stand the abuse that the average hunter gives such aweapon, neither is it reliable in extreme cold weather.

Osage Orange

Osage is a very hard, heavy and resilient wood. It is some-times called hedge apple, probably because it is used to formhedge rows and bears a fruit that may resemble an apple oran orange to some people but hedge apples certainly do nottaste like either apples or oranges.

This tree has a general distribution from the plains east-ward to the Atlantic Coast. The best quality for bow purposescomes from Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma.
