A correctly made wooden arrow is round in shape, thediameter being 9/32 inches, 5/16 inches, and 11/32 inches de-pending on the weight of bow out of which they are to beshot. As a rule, ladies' arrows are 9/32 inches diameter and

men's are 5/16 diameter, about the thickness of an ordinarylead pencil. The shaft scribes parallel lines from the pile up-ward to a point about 5 inches from the nock; from this pointit tapers slightly toward the nock.
In discussing the various sections of the arrow we willbegin with the pile. This is the metal armour on the end ofthe arrow. Its purpose is to protect the end of the arrow. Itis made from cold rolled steel or brass. Fig. 17a shows a crosssection of a parallel pile showing the average dimensions. Itscribes parallel lines from the open end forward to the placewhere the point begins; here, it tapers to a sharp point on a60° angle; it weighs about 50 grains. Fig. 17b shows the bulletpoint pile. This is made from the metal jacket of a 30 cal.
