Archery Tackle : Page 92

The wound produced by a broadhead is not unlike thatproduced by the thrust of a sword. The arrow has deep pene-tration and often completely passes through a deer. The vic-tim does not die from the shock produced by the arrow butfrom hemorrhage caused by the wound.

There has been quite a bit of controversy as to the lethaleffects produced by the bodkin and the broadhead. Both aredeadly missiles—both will cut large veins and arteries—bothhave good penetration. Most experienced archers seem to be-lieve that a well made broadhead probably has the deeperpenetration. They also seem to believe that the bodkin has amore steady flight. Unless a broadhead is fitted exactly truewith the axis of the arrow's shaft, it is liable to "plane" inits flight. The bodkin will not plane but will pursue a steadycourse. So, it will not make a great deal of difference whichstyle one may select, the main thing is to place the shot inthe right place.
