The metatarsal glands are located on the shanks of bothbucks and doe. These glands secrete a scent or musk that isgenerally believed to be the agent whereby a scattered groupcan reassemble—or, a buck can follow a doe. There is much tobe learned concerning all the functions and purposes of theseglands. Deer also have glands on each of the four feet, locatedjust above and on line with the cleft of the hooves; thesesecrete an unpleasant odor. Very little authority can be foundthat sheds any positive light on the purpose of these glands. It is believed, however, that by reason of this secretion, ascent is left in the tracks that enables others of their species,as well as natural enemies, to trail them.
