The presence of the larynx and the apparent absence of itsuse have caused men to give this condition a great deal ofthought. Some species of the deer family, such as the elk andthe moose, certainly make use of their voice in no unmistak-able way. Some of the old world deer use the voice. Somestudents of the deer advance the theory that since the deer isan old animal, geologically speaking—having reached a statewell resembling the present species during the Pliocene—itmay have used its voice as a mating call in ages past. Thesestudents reason that, perhaps, the ancient predators, whichcould well include the sabre tooth tiger, took advantage ofthe call in locating their prey and that self preservation causedthe deer to silence the call. This is a subject for the scientiststo give further study.
