Deer : Page 195

They seem to know the natural forest sounds such as windblowing through the trees, the bark of a squirrel, the songsof birds, the noise of rippling water and even the noise of astorm. They know that sounds that are natural during themid day may not be natural in the morning or evening andare alerted to those sounds. The tread of the untrainedhunter, though the hunter may think he is very cautious, will be heard by the deer and recognized as a disturbance thatdoes not belong to the area; this will put them on alert. Therubbing together of canvas clad hunters' legs, the brushingof the hunter's coat against trees, the crashing of twigs bythe hunter's boots are all unnatural sounds which cause thedeer to be on the alert.
