I once got confused at the corner of Wood Street and FifthAvenue in Pittsburgh, not 100 yards from where I had workedfor years. At that time, a drug store was on one of the cornersof this intersection. It had an entrance from Wood Street and

another from Fifth Avenue. I went in from the Wood Streetentrance, made a purchase and went out of the Fifth Avenueentrance. When I emerged on the street, I subconsciouslyturned to my right, which would have been the right move-ment to make in order to reach my place of work had I goneout the way I had entered. For a moment I was lost. I couldrecognize nothing familiar and a strange sensation ran overme. I saw a clock at the other end of the block, its hands point-ing to a quarter of one. Then I realized that it was Kauf-mann's clock, a landmark on Fifth Avenue. I think I spent thenext five minutes trying to convince myself that I had notgone crazy and wondering what I would have done had I beenin an unfamiliar forest.
