Deer : Page 223

Since the death of the chestnuts, deer have had to changetheir eating habits. They substitute acorns for the lost nuts. So, deer may be found in the Fall around stands of oak timber. The beech tree has a three cornered nut that is excellent foodand very pleasing to the taste. It is, however, quite small insize. Deer will be found in the beech groves when there is agood mast. The deer hunter should locate these stands andnote the trails; these trails will lead to water and to beddinggrounds.

In Pennsylvania, especially, there are many farms thatborder the marginal wooded sections. Some of these farms arein use and some have been abandoned. On almost all of theabandoned farms, the orchards are still there and bear fruit. This fruit may be worm eaten and dwarfed in size from lackof care, but it is fruit nevertheless and deer love apples. Deereat the fallen fruit and pick it from the trees as high as theycan reach.
