Deer : Page 225

The bow hunter should locate these old orchards and findout what farms are being raided as these are the places thatdeer are most likely to be found.

The normal feeding time for deer is late evening and earlymorning. If their feeding grounds are disturbed at these times, they will change their dining hours and feed at night. There-fore, the feeding time should be noted.

After paunches are well filled—be it buckwheat, apples, corn, acorns, beechnuts, browse or whatnot—they retire tothe bedding grounds for rest and the completion of theirdigestion. These bedding grounds are selected with care whichare always found in good cover—usually on ridges or on a sidehill with a commanding view. There are, usually, well definedtrails leading from the feeding grounds to the places wherethey bed down. The bow hunter must have all these thingswell fixed in his mind.
