military precision and stands very erect with heels close to-gether makes a very handsome and snappy appearance. Butthe archer who has a stance like this never makes a good score;he sways on his narrow foundation, he is in a strained position,he cannot settle down to a steady aim. So, be less conscious ofyour appearance and get into a position that will produce thebest results.

Nocking

Nocking is the process of fitting the arrow on the string. There are both right and wrong ways to do it. In order to getuniform performance from arrows they must all be shot in thesame way. Nocking an arrow is important; it must be doneexactly the same each time one shoots. It must be fitted on thestring at exactly the same place. Some people make a mark onthe string with ink; this should be exactly square with thearrow plate or arrow rest. Perhaps we should take time outand say something about the arrow rest, which is a rather newidea. Up until a few years ago the top of the bow hand wasthe arrow rest. This was not constant as the bow hand did notalways grip the bow in exactly the same place, it might be up1/8 of an inch or down 1/8 of an inch. This does not seem like alot of difference, but, without troubling you with a mathe-matical formula, it does make a difference of 16 inches at 50yards, enough to miss a deer or a sacrifice of 6 points on thetarget.
