He knew they had not seen him, but he also knew theywere suspicious—they had learned that when the blue jay putson a show, all is not well. He could not immediately followas they were probably watching from cover. If he would re-main still they might come back, or they might, from curi-osity, circle him to find out what was wrong. He movedcautiously to a position where he had a view of the orchardand also a view of a clearing just back of him. He would waitand keep an eye on both places.

While he waited, he analyzed the shot he made. His arrowhad the proper elevation, but it just missed the hind quarters,not enough lead.
