He waited, looked and listened. Rain was still falling andthe wind caused leaves and branches to fall; these disturbedhis concentration on listening; he knew that he was unableto hear the approach of a deer—could not distinguish thesounds that might be made by a deer from those made by thefalling leaves, the patter of the rain or the rustling of windblown branches. He, also, knew that these same sounds caused

by the rain, while being recognized by deer as natural, pre-vented them from detecting sounds that were unnatural. Per-haps a rainy day favored the hunter. Then he rememberedhaving read that a rainy day was the best kind of a day tostill hunt and watch.
