He realized that deer do not always walk down the middleof the trail; they often strayed some distance from it butusually followed the general direction of the trail. If theywere in a hurry to get to a certain objective, they would traveldirectly in the trail but, if they were leisurely browsing along,they would move at some distance away where the browse wasmore plentiful. So, he watched both sides, noted every move-ment, studied every suspicious bush and kept his mind onlooking for deer. He knew that a deer was only three feethigh or less and that they, usually, sneaked along with headsdown. So, instead of looking for a big animal high above theground, he searched low—looked for something the size of abig dog or a sheep.
