Comment: John used his head to good advantage allthrough this venture. He did take a chance on constructingthe shelter. This structure could have been detected but,since the deer were traveling some twenty yards off the trailand since it was raining and the wind blowing, it turned out.well. The hunter was not sure of his knowledge of deeranatomy. He had made a perfect heart shot but he thoughtthat his arrow had struck too low.

Many experienced hunters do not know exactly where adeer's heart is located; many of them will tell you that theheart lies about midway between back and belly at a pointabout four inches back of the shoulder joint; this is incorrect.The heart lies low in the chest, well up toward the forwardsection of the chest cavity. Actually, the heart is between andprotected by the lower portion of the shoulders or the upperportion of the front legs. See sketch No. 40. You will notethat just above and slightly forward of the shoulder rear jointthe heart is protected only by muscle and ribs. A broadheador bodkin will shear these ribs and pass on through the heart.You will also note dotted line circling the chest cavity; thissection contains the lungs and many major blood vessels. An
