HUNTING WITH A PARTNER
When two or more bowmen are hunting together as a team,at least one of them should be well acquainted with thecountry. It would be better, of course, if all concerned knewthe conditions. But there may be times when a bowman willwant to take along a friend who may be a novice and theremay be times when he would like to take another hunter, whohas had experience in hunting but has not had an opportunityto become familiar with the terrain in which they are to hunt.
The first thing a team should consider is to devise somemeans of communication that will not alert the game. Thehuman voice is one of the most unnatural sounds that can beproduced in the forest; therefore, the hunters should refrainfrom talking or shouting directions or positions. One veryclever chap solved this problem by the use of crow calls. Thecall of a crow is a natural sound in the woods and, if properlydone, deer seem to pay such sounds no heed. A prearrangedcode of signals can be worked out whereby the crow call canbe used with very satisfactory results. It must be borne inmind that an excessive use of this call may defeat its purposeand that one should become proficient in using the callbefore trying it out in actual hunting.
