When this hour has come, the captain gives the startingsignal, which may be a blast from a whistle. The drivers starttheir march with shouting and, otherwise, making as muchnoise as possible. The theory is that deer that may be in thearea will be frightened and will start moving toward thewatchers. It is assumed that the deer will follow the runwaysand make for the crossings that lead to the next valley or theother side of the mountain or the valley.
