in the expulsion of that member or a severe reprimand. Thecaptain then returns to the drivers and places them a hundredyards or so apart where they wait for the signal to begin thedrive. They are all law abiding citizens and will not startthe drive until the arrival of the hour prescribed by law.
When this hour has come, the captain gives the startingsignal, which may be a blast from a whistle. The drivers starttheir march with shouting and, otherwise, making as muchnoise as possible. The theory is that deer that may be in thearea will be frightened and will start moving toward thewatchers. It is assumed that the deer will follow the runwaysand make for the crossings that lead to the next valley or theother side of the mountain or the valley.
