But, all deer are not so cooperative. There are many amongthem that have gone through previous drives. Instead of duti-fully bounding down the trail to be shot by the watchers,some of them sulk in thick cover; then, when the drivers havepassed on, they go in the opposite direction. Often the ex-perienced eyes of the drivers will spot one of these sulkerswhich will give that hunter an opportunity to shoot.

Neither do all the deer, being driven forward, follow themiddle of the trail; they have a habit of cutting in betweenthe watchers—sneaking by with such stealth that the watchersdo not see them—and using various other tricks that get thempast the watcher. Deer, like people, have various degrees ofintelligence; some are dumb enough to trot down the middleof the trail to be shot by the watchers.
