Sometimes they reflexed their bows by bending them overheated stones. They were often painted in various designs.

The string was made from deer sinew; they had a loopat one end that could be fitted on and off the upper nockat will; the lower end of the string had an attachment ofbuck skin with which the string was bound to the lower nock.

Dr. Pope, in his "Hunting with the Bow," pages 14 to 17,describes in detail how the last wild Indian, Ishi, made abow.

Dr. Pope seems to have been greatly interested in theIndian bow; he made more outstanding, scientific tests ofthese implements than any others of record. These testswere made for the Anthropology Department of the Uni-versity of California; the records are now on file at that seatof learning. These tests give us a picture of the distance theIndian bows would shoot.
