The arrow maker would locate a ledge of flint or a bed ofobsidian from which he would knock off small pieces with aheavy stone which he used as a hammer. From these fragmentshe would select slivers of the proper size from which to makearrow points and other implements.
The arrow maker sat on the ground. He fashioned a pieceof heavy buckskin to fit the palm and wrist of the left hand;this was done for protection. He selected a piece of materialwhich he placed on the buckskin and held it in position withall four fingers. The right hand operated a tool made fromdeer horn and lashed to a wooden stick. This flaking tool wasbrought in contact with the material against which enoughpressure was exerted to chip off a small flake. This process wasrepeated, time after time, with great patience and skill, untilthe arrow head was "sculptured" into shape.
