Dr.Pope became Ishi's "personal physician." This was the be-ginning of a strange and beautiful friendship between a manof the highest modern culture and a man literally draggedfrom the neolithic past. It was Ishi who got Dr. Pope inter-ested in archery. He taught the doctor much of the nativeIndian lore. It was largely through the lessons he learned fromIshi that he became so successful in hunting with the bow.
