Maurice became an expert archer and hunter. He killedall manner of animals and fowl native to that region.

He was a gifted writer. Many of his articles were acceptedand printed by Harpers magazine. Through these articlesmany people took up the sport and it was largely by this in-fluence that the National Association was founded.

The next great exponent of archery in hunting is to befound in the late Dr. Saxton Pope of California. He was laterjoined by Arthur Young. This team killed specimens of allAmerican big game including the Kodiak bear. In 1925 theyand the famous author, Stewart Edward White, made a tripto Africa; there they killed 17 lions with the bow as well asmany other specimens of African big game.
